Dae Mae (Phil Hartman) is one of the resident teachers at Furnace Mountain.
He became interested in Buddhist meditation in the early 1970s, and began practicing meditation in the Vipassana tradition in 1977. In the early 1980s, Dae Mae moved to Charlottesville, Virginia, and began attending retreats with Kyozan Joshu Sasaki Roshi. In 1986, together with Bill Stephens, a senior student of Sasaki Roshi, he founded the Charlottesville Zen Center.
In the spring of 1987, Dae Mae attended a retreat, lead by Zen Master Seung Sahn. The retreat was held at Zen Master Dae Gak’s home in Lexington, Kentucky. Dae Mae has continued to study Zen meditation with Zen Master Dae Gak since that time, receiving permission to teach in 2017. He is a retired social worker, and has a son/daughter-in-law/grandson living in Austin, TX .
