Craig Learned - Dae Mun Soen Sa

Dae Mun (Great Gate) Craig Learned attended his first intensive Zen sesshin in January of 1967 with Sensei Philip Kapleau. Beginning in 1970, he spent the next five years participating in the programs and Sesshin at the Rochester Zen Center under the guidance of Philip Kapleau.

In 1987, Dae Mun helped found the Nam Son Sa Temple/Southwest Zen Academy in Houston, Texas.  He studied with many visiting Korean monks.  He served as the leader and eventually teacher of the Korean Son (Zen) meditation group until 2015.  The Nam Son Sa Temple/Southwest Zen Academy practices in the Sudoksa lineage and tradition of Korean Chogye Son as does Furnace Mountain.

Dae Mun began practicing with Zen Master Dae Gak in 2003.  He received Inka (teaching certification) in May of 2007 from Zen Master Dae Gak.  Dae Mun is a regular participant at the Furnace Mountain Zen Retreat Center and has been serving on the Furnace Mountain board for many years.

He now lives in the South Toe River Valley near Burnsville, North Carolina with his wife, Yong Seong Halcyon Reese Learned and practices with the Moon over the Valley Buddhist Sangha in Yancey County, North Carolina.

Craig and Halcyon will reopen the Boxwood* Zendo for regular Zen sitting at the end of the pandemic.

*(From Entangling Vines Zen Koan Collection: “The Boxwood tree is said to be an extremely slow growing tree….”Boxwood Zen” often refers to the Zen of students who, though slow to awaken, are earnest and unswerving in their practice.”
